Locksmith or Self-Install

A smart lock is a mechanical lock with a motor on it. The mechanical half is still what fails.

The box makes it look like a screwdriver job, and on a true, square door it very nearly is. On a door that has dropped it is not, because a motor cannot force a bolt that a wrist could. A smart lock is heavier and far less tolerant of a strike that is a few millimetres out than the lock it replaces, so the alignment gets fixed first and the hardware goes on afterwards. Alignment before electronics is what separates a Fort Collins locksmith from a screwdriver.

Types of Smart Lock Installation

Three shapes, and the door and the household decide which level of security belongs on it.

01

Retrofit Thumbturn

The motor mounts inside over the existing deadbolt. The outside of the door and the key both stay exactly as they are.

02

Full Replacement Deadbolt

The whole lock changes, keypad outside and motor inside, with a mechanical key override for the morning the batteries are flat.

03

Commercial Access Control

Fobs, cards and audit trails on a commercial premises. A different security class with its own wiring and its own hardware.

When It Takes Longer

Most fits are an hour. Three things are not.

Glass and aluminium doors usually need a different lock entirely, because a stile that narrow will not take a standard bore. A door thicker than standard rules out some models outright, which is why the measurement happens before anything is ordered. And a door that has settled has to be brought back true first, because a motorised lock fighting a strike is the fastest way to a dead battery and a house nobody can get into, and the safe order is always alignment before hardware.

What Goes Wrong

Six failures we get called out to put right, and every one of them is avoidable.

  • Fitted to a dragging bolt — the motor works twice as hard and the batteries last a month
  • No override key cut — a flat battery and a lock nobody in the house can open
  • Installer left on the account — somebody else still holds a code and your door is not really secure
  • Wrong door thickness — a lock ordered without measuring goes back in the box
  • Default master code left — a security upgrade that ships with the code in the manual
  • Short strike screws — the commonest security fault we find, smart lock or not

What Changes the Price of Smart Lock Installation

Six things move a smart lock quote, and you can ask about all six on the phone.

  • Retrofit or full lock — keeping the cylinder is cheaper than changing the whole lock
  • Door alignment — a dropped door is corrected before any motorised lock goes on
  • Door thickness and backset — some models will not fit a door thicker than standard
  • Hardware supplied or yours — fitting a lock you already bought costs less than sourcing one
  • Keyed alike — running the override key on the same key as the back door adds nothing
  • Number of doors — the first lock carries the call-out, every one after it is cheaper

Before You Call

Three things make the visit shorter and the quote firm.

Door thickness and backset

A tape measure on the edge answers both. It decides which lock fits and it is the safe way to avoid a second trip.

Whether you already bought one

Have the box. Fitting hardware you own costs less than sourcing it, and we will say honestly if the model is wrong for the door.

The phone you want it paired to

Bring it and know the app login. The account is set up in your name before we leave, not ours.

What Happens on a Smart Lock Installation Visit

Alignment, then hardware, then the account. Skipping the first step is why these fail.

The door is checked first

Swing, strike and bolt travel, before a motorised lock is anywhere near the door. A bolt that drags will drain batteries in weeks, and a flat battery is a security problem rather than an inconvenience.

The lock goes on

Backset and thickness matched, the strike opened out where the bolt needs room, and the override key cut and tested by hand.

Codes are set and handed over

Your account, your phone, your codes. We do not leave ourselves on the lock, and the master code is written down for you, which is the safe way to hand a lock over.

Who Calls Us for a Smart Lock

Three situations account for most of the smart lock work we do in a week.

01

Short-Term Rentals

A code per guest, changed at each turnover, so the place is secure between bookings and there is no key to lose on a trail.

02

Households With Teenagers

Nobody carries a key, nobody loses one, and the record shows who came in and when without anybody having to ask.

03

Businesses

Staff codes on a commercial premises instead of keys that walk and stay a security risk. Our commercial locksmith work covers the access control side too.

Smart lock installation on site, checking bolt alignment before fitting a motorised deadbolt
Smart locks fitted at the door: alignment corrected first, override key tested, codes handed over and the door left secure before we leave.

A smart lock adds codes, phone access and a record of who came and went, on top of a lock that still keeps the door secure when the wifi does not. Fitting it well matters more than which brand it is.

Battery life runs a year or more on a door that is properly aligned, and a fraction of that on one that is not, so alignment is a security question as much as a convenience one. Commercial premises are covered on the same call-out, and a master key system can be built alongside the codes so staff keys open what they should and nothing more. A safe or strongbox can be opened and re-set while we are there, and every lock is quoted per door before anything is fitted, so the number on the phone is the number on the invoice for the service. Where a smart lock is the wrong answer for a door we will say so plainly rather than fit one, because the safe recommendation is worth more than the sale.

Frequently Asked Locksmith Questions

The questions Fort Collins residents ask a locksmith most, on locks, keys and getting back inside.

Can you get in without damaging my lock?

Almost always, on a standard residential lock. Non-destructive entry is what a locksmith aims for, and the lock keeps working, so there is nothing to replace. Exceptions are a high security cylinder built to resist this, and one already damaged or drilled by someone else. If a lock must come out you hear that price first, never after, and the security of the property is restored on that Fort Collins visit.

We just moved in. Rekey or replace?

Rekey, in almost every case. If the lock works there is no reason to buy new, and changing the pins retires every key the last owner handed out for a fraction of the price. Replace only when a lock is worn out, is the wrong grade for the door, or you want a keypad instead. A Fort Collins locksmith pushing hardware on a working lock is selling, not advising, and the security gain is nil.

The door sticks. Is that the lock?

Usually not the lock. If it works with the door open and fails shut, the frame has moved and no new lock will fix it. A Fort Collins locksmith resets the strike or corrects the swing first. A worn residential cylinder differs: it fails whatever the door does, and that is an emergency waiting.

How fast can you get here?

In Fort Collins itself, quickly. The outer towns are an honest drive and the locksmith quotes that, not an optimistic figure. Snow stretches every run and fills the service diary at once. An emergency call runs around the clock, and an honest price is agreed on the phone before the van leaves.

What if I find a cheaper quote?

Compare the whole number. A professional locksmith quotes the lock, labour and call-out together, so nothing new appears on the step. A very low phone price that becomes three hundred dollars at the car is the oldest trick in this trade. We also cut car keys in Fort Collins and cover commercial premises, so one service visit takes care of the house, the car and the security of both.
